Mix equal parts courage, compassion, brains, and sass and you get Veronica Mars—my personal hero and the main character of a TV show that rocked prime time with witty dialogue and compelling characters. I don’t understand why the show was cancelled after only three seasons. I loved watching Veronica track down dog snatchers and murderers—she was clever, tech-savvy, and passionate about justice.
The network never should have cancelled such a smart and stylish show. After all, we don’t see enough true female heroes on TV or elsewhere in the media: girls and women, who, like Veronica, are strong-minded and independent, brilliant and self-assured, brave and just. Veronica was even more likable and realistic a character because she was far from perfect. She sometimes jumped to the wrong conclusions, she didn’t always get the criminal, and she often needed a little help from her friends to outsmart the bad guys.
In addition to giving us such a classy young hero, the show balanced a complex series of mysteries. Some mysteries were solved within one episode and some spanned multiple seasons. The characters weren’t always what they seemed to be and the plotlines were sprinkled with comedy, tragedy, loyalty, and revenge. It was encouraging to see a show that believed its teen audience was smart enough to appreciate these storylines. I think TV networks should fight harder to keep such thought provoking shows on the air. Don’t you agree that we need more heroes like Veronica Mars?
As Veronica would say, “Tragedy blows through your life like a tornado, uprooting everything. Creating chaos. You wait for the dust to settle and then you choose. You can live in the wreckage and pretend it’s still the mansion you remember. Or you can crawl from the rubble and slowly rebuild.”
Cancelled! Wouldn’t you have wanted the opportunity to get to know this super-clever detective better?
